This announcement applies to all grade 11 and returning grade 12 students who are interested in learning more about a service learning opportunity. The Waterloo Catholic School Board has been invited to select one student from St. Benedict’s to participate in the Go Guatemala program developed and run by faculty at St. Jerome’s University.
Go Guatemala is a service learning trip that is rooted in volunteering and learning primarily at an orphanage. St. Jerome’s University developed Go Guatemala to assist in educating students as global citizens. Through pre-departure sessions and an international travel experience, participants will reinforce foundations of responsible citizenship.
The selected student would be travelling to parts of Guatemala for 11 days with a group of St. Jerome’s staff and first year students to:
- Learn about and understand the causes of injustice, inequality, and suffering around the world
- Investigate the effects of globalization on the world’s oppressed peoples
- Become part of a community of friendship, support, education and action
For more information, please email or speak to Ms. Smukavich, or come to the information session run by the coordinator from St. Jerome’s on Thursday April 24, 2014 at the beginning of lunch in the seminar room near the guidance office. Information regarding applications, cost and travel itinerary will be given.
